Top Pick For The Best Hungarian Vizsla Coat 2024
Don’t have time to read my entire best coat for vizsla guide and just want to hear my recommendation?
Well, I love the Hurtta Expedition Parka because it’s been designed for dogs just like vizslas with short hair and without an undercoat, plus it’s jammed packed with some great features.
Hurtta Expedition Parka
The Hurtta Expedition Park is made from a laminated nylon material that is both waterproof and breathable and is lined with a soft, breathable fabric.
It’s easy to put on, and for a snug fit, the length of the back, neckline and collar circumference are all adjustable.
The jacket provides excellent coverage and access to the harness or collar. It also has reflective piping and is 100% machine washable.
This article is based on research and personal experience as a Vizsla owner. I’m not a qualified dog trainer, breeder, Vet or dog behaviourist.
Things To Consider When Choosing Vizsla Dog Jackets And Sweaters
There is no shortage of great dog coats, jackets and sweaters for vizslas – however, it doesn’t mean that any one of these will do.
To ensure you get the perfect coat for your vizsla, one that is fit for purpose, make sure you consider the following factors.
Material
Just like clothes for humans, dog coats for Hungarian vizsla dogs are made from all kinds of materials.
However, the main things you’ll want to consider are:
- Whether you want a waterproof coat (or is water resistant ok)
- Plus whether you will need it to be lined or insulated to add warmth.
You also want to ensure you purchase a jacket made from good quality material that will withstand wear and tear and everything else your vizsla is going to throw at it.
So don’t go for the cheapest you can find, as you’ll very likely be replacing it within a few weeks.
Style
Dog jackets and coats come in a range of different styles and designs.
There are jackets which:
- Just cover their backs
- Cover the top and underside
- Coats that resemble pajamas for dogs, covering your dog’s entire torso and limbs
- And many other jackets with coverage somewhere in between.
If you’re looking for something to keep your dog warm, then the more coverage, the better – although this will largely depend on where you live and just how cold it gets.
The same if you want to keep your dog protected from rain or the sun – how much coverage are you wanting.
You’ll also want to consider your dog’s level of comfort – some dogs just don’t like having certain parts of their bodies covered.
You’ll need to consider this, or it’s going to be a real chore every time you try and get them to wear their jacket.
Purpose
Unless you’re buying your vizsla a jacket as a fashion statement, then there is likely to be a problem you’re trying to overcome by purchasing the jacket.
Perhaps it is to:
- Keep them warm
- Keep them dry in the rain so they don’t get cold
- Protect from the elements while engaging in outdoor activities such as hunting or agility activities
- Protect them in extreme weather such as snow, wind or extreme heat.
Whatever the reason you’re buying the jacket in the first place – don’t lose sight of this. Don’t be overcome by marketing gimmicks and end up with a jacket not fit for purpose.
You also might need to consider getting more than one jacket if you’re trying to solve different problems.
For example, a jacket meant to protect your dog in the snow won’t necessarily be the right jacket to keep your vizsla protected from the rain in a warmer climate.
Shape And Fit
Given a vizsla’s slim framed body, thin neck and deep chest, it’s vital that you pay particular attention to the shape and fit of the dog coat you buy.
If the coat you purchase isn’t made to suit this kind of body, the jacket will be too big, or at least too baggy in parts and won’t do the job it’s supposed to do.
Most manufacturers provide a sizing guide, so it is essential that you take certain measurements of your dog and check these against the different sized coats.
Pay particular attention to the chest girth measurement.
In addition, coats should have at least one or two different adjustment points to help you get the right fit.
Cleaning
I probably don’t need to tell you just how dirty vizslas can become and this doesn’t change when they wear a jacket.
So having a coat that is easy to clean is vital! Ideally, you’ll want one that is machine washable and not going to lose its shape after a few washes.
Leash Attachment
If you’re looking for a jacket for your vizsla to wear while out and about, then you’ll want to find them a coat that makes it easy for you to attach their leash.
If you like to put the harness on underneath, look for jackets that give you access to the collar or harness so you can still easily attach a leash.
Check where the attachment points are – whether they are at the front or on the top to wear with a harness.
Otherwise if you tend to place the harness over the top, this isn’t an important criteria to check.

Vizsla Dog Coat FAQs
Do vizslas need coats?
Hungarian vizslas have a very short coat and no undercoat, so they can feel the cold more than other dog breeds. As a result many vizsla dog owners opt to purchase a coat to keep them warm.
If you live in a cold climate where temperatures are below zero during the Winter, a warm dog coat is a good option for your pup.
Can vizslas handle the cold?
Yes, vizslas can handle the cold. When active outside, they most likely won’t feel the cold, but if standing or sitting still in the wind, rain or snow you may notice they don’t enjoy being outside so much. In which case a dog coat is a good idea.
