How to choose vizsla dog names
You want your puppy’s name to reflect their personality, stand the test of time as they get older and be easy to say and understand.
Here are some basic tips to consider when choosing good vizsla names.
1. Choose short names
Ideally look at Hungarian vizsla dog names that are one or two syllables long.
Quick and simple to say, easy for your dog to hear, short names tend to be better than long ones for many reasons.
2. Reduce confusion
Have you ever got confused when multiple people in the room have a similar sounding name? I do all the time!
For that reason, I recommend you choose a name that starts with a different letter of the alphabet to others in your household and doesn’t have a similar sound either.
3. Like the short and long version
Think about both the long and shortened versions of the name – you really want to love both of the variations.
We loved the name Billie for our girl, but didn’t like the shortened version, Bill.
4. Not too similar to instructions
Don’t choose a name that sounds the same as common instructions like no, yes, sit or come. It will just confuse your pup!

5. Different to your other pets
If you have other pets, it is better to select a name that sounds very different so they don’t get confused when you call.

6. Wait to see your puppy
Finally our top tip is to agree a short list of names and wait to see your vizsla puppy before you settle on a name.
Often there will be one clear choice once you have had the chance to see and meet your puppy.
Or better still, take your short list with you, and pick the name the puppy responds to when you call the different vizsla names out.

Been roaming on this website for awhile now that I found out what breed my dog is. Found myself on this, even though I’ve came up with a name for her already, which I picked Penny because of her coat/fur. Was rather thrilled to see that her name made it on the list. Thank you for sharing this article!
Nice job on the Hun names for male and female Vizsla’s! We liked Adelaide (Addi for short) for our new female who is gonna be a pheasant hunting companion and house dog. I’m of Hungarian (Magyar) heritage as my folks immigrated to the US after the WW II. We had lots of dogs growing up and all with Hun names. The two best names that I haven’t seen on any list on-line are “Csibi” (pronounced chi-bee, rimes with “libby”) which translates to “rascal” – a great name for a male dog) and “Tisza” (pronounced Teesa, rimes with “Lisa”) which is a famous river in Hungary (they say Attila the Hun was buried next to it) which is a great female dog name. I hope you incorporate them on your great name lists! Thnx for taking an interest in such a great breed and a great country!

Hi Tony, Adelaide is a great name – it was on our short list too! Thanks for the new suggestions – they are great names, happy to add them to the list. Cheers, Rachel
