If you don’t have a name in mind from the start, it can be a difficult choice! But don’t worry – we have collated a great list of vizsla dog names to help you choose.

We went through this process when we brought our new vizsla puppy home. There were so many good vizsla puppy names and our list grew to over 30 options!

Whether you are searching for Hungarian names for dogs, popular vizsla names, cool Hungarian dog names or original names for vizslas, we are confident you will find some good dog names for vizslas in our list.

How to choose vizsla dog names

You want your puppy’s name to reflect their personality, stand the test of time as they get older and be easy to say and understand.

Here are some basic tips to consider when choosing good vizsla names.

1. Choose short names

Ideally look at Hungarian vizsla dog names that are one or two syllables long.

Quick and simple to say, easy for your dog to hear, short names tend to be better than long ones for many reasons.

2. Reduce confusion

Have you ever got confused when multiple people in the room have a similar sounding name? I do all the time!

For that reason, I recommend you choose a name that starts with a different letter of the alphabet to others in your household and doesn’t have a similar sound either.

3. Like the short and long version

Think about both the long and shortened versions of the name – you really want to love both of the variations.

We loved the name Billie for our girl, but didn’t like the shortened version, Bill.

4. Not too similar to instructions

Don’t choose a name that sounds the same as common instructions like no, yes, sit or come. It will just confuse your pup!

5. Different to your other pets

If you have other pets, it is better to select a name that sounds very different so they don’t get confused when you call.

6. Wait to see your puppy

Finally our top tip is to agree a short list of names and wait to see your vizsla puppy before you settle on a name.

Often there will be one clear choice once you have had the chance to see and meet your puppy.

Or better still, take your short list with you, and pick the name the puppy responds to when you call the different vizsla names out.

  1. We named our 2 vizsla males (one year apart), Slick and Flash.
Unknown to us at the time they both have lived up to their names.
They have also lived up to every other trait known about Vizslas.

  2. I rescued my girl last weekend. They called her a hound mix.
    Technically, I guess she is.
My best guess besides Vizsla, she has beagle (her muzzle from the side is definitely beagle and there’s a slight white line down the top, plus her nose is ALWAYS to the ground) plus some staffie (telltale white on her chest and she is a strong and stubborn as a bull when she doesn’t want to do something).
Otherwise, she is the sweetest gal I could have ever picked.
My daughter’s idea was to name her Louise (Thelma and Louise) and call her Lulu. I told her no, her name is Lulu and you can call her Louise (like she used to call my 19-year-old cat, Charlie, Charles. He passed away 7 weeks ago) when she knows her name and is trained.
I never even heard of the Vizsla breed and now I’m in love.

  3. We named our Make A Wish Vizsla, Kobe! He is now 1 yr and 3 mo old. He is the joy of our lives!! Unconditional love, cuddles, and laughs! Waited a year and a half for him and worth everyday…

  4. I grew up in Central California. When my husband and I started searching for names I made the comment that she was the color of the enormous trees found in the national parks I use to visit as a child, Sequoias. He loved the name. Then I remarked that we could also call her Koi for short, which is a fish that is often an orange/reddish color much like a Vizsla. So we named her Sequoia (and at 55 lbs. with long legs she is rather large much like the trees she is named after) and we often call her Koi for short. She is a dream!

  5. Been roaming on this website for awhile now that I found out what breed my dog is. Found myself on this, even though I’ve came up with a name for her already, which I picked Penny because of her coat/fur. Was rather thrilled to see that her name made it on the list. Thank you for sharing this article!

    • My V rescued me when I adopted her from a shelter (where she was guessed to be a “pink nose pit mix or maybe some kind of lab mix”), but I knew she was 100% a Velcro bestie.
I let her pick her name over a weekend by trying out different ones until she decided that her name was to be Kyleigh (Kiki, KyKy, Ky, Key the V). Got to spoil her for nearly 12 yrs & now after quite awhile, I’m ready for a Vizsla puppy wanting a furever home with me. I LOVE your name suggestions & saving them for when I find my new best fur friend.

  6. Nice job on the Hun names for male and female Vizsla’s! We liked Adelaide (Addi for short) for our new female who is gonna be a pheasant hunting companion and house dog. I’m of Hungarian (Magyar) heritage as my folks immigrated to the US after the WW II. We had lots of dogs growing up and all with Hun names. The two best names that I haven’t seen on any list on-line are “Csibi” (pronounced chi-bee, rimes with “libby”) which translates to “rascal” – a great name for a male dog) and “Tisza” (pronounced Teesa, rimes with “Lisa”) which is a famous river in Hungary (they say Attila the Hun was buried next to it) which is a great female dog name. I hope you incorporate them on your great name lists! Thnx for taking an interest in such a great breed and a great country!
